The "First Look": Why Breaking with Tradition Can Transform Your Experience (and Your Photos).

For decades, tradition has dictated that the couple should not see each other before the ceremony. It is a moment steeped in symbolism, but one that often comes with immense pressure and an extremely tight schedule for the day.

Today, more and more couples are choosing to break with this tradition in favor of the “First Look”: a private meeting, arranged away from the guests, a few hours before they exchange vows. As a photographer, I’ve seen how this simple change has transformed not only the quality of the photo galleries, but also the couple’s state of mind.

Here's why choosing a private "first look" could be one of the best decisions for your wedding.

1. A moment of privacy amid the hustle and bustle of the day

On your wedding day, you're constantly surrounded by family, friends, and the officiants. It's rare to find a moment to just look at each other and realize what's happening.

  • The emotional benefit: The First Look provides this sacred space. It’s a moment when you can cry, laugh out loud, or simply hold each other tight—without 100 pairs of eyes staring at you.

  • Candid shots: For my approach to photojournalism, they’re a goldmine. Without the barrier of the crowd, people’s reactions are more raw, more sincere, and infinitely more poetic.

2. Optimize your engagement with your guests

One of the biggest logistical challenges in Montreal or Laval is travel time and managing the reception. Traditionally, couple photos are taken right after the ceremony, which means you often miss the entire reception.

  • Make the most of your reception: By doing the First Look and couple portraits before the ceremony, you’ll free up your schedule. Once you’ve said “I do,” you can join your loved ones right away—a glass of champagne in hand—and truly enjoy the celebration you’ve planned so meticulously.

3. Mastering Lighting and Set Design

As a photographer, light is my primary tool. During a ceremony in the middle of the afternoon, the sun can be harsh and cast sharp shadows.

  • The Artistic Choice: Planning a First Look allows you to choose the perfect moment for your portraits. We can make use of the minimalist architecture of a modern building in Montreal or the textures of a hidden spot in Laval, all bathed in much softer, more flattering light.

  • Technical precision: This allows me to use my wide-aperture lenses to create that artistic background blur, while ensuring that every detail of your outfits is captured with the technical clarity that my Sony cameras provide.

4. Relieve Stress to Better Enjoy the Ceremony

It's fascinating to see how much your nerves settle down after the First Look. The fear of the unknown disappears.

  • A Serene Walk Down the Aisle: Breaking with tradition doesn’t spoil the moment of walking down the aisle; it often makes it more meaningful. You’re no longer paralyzed by the stress of seeing each other for the first time, which allows you to be fully present and attentive to the words you exchange and the emotions of your loved ones.

A modern tradition, a timeless legacy

Whether you choose to follow tradition or create your own special moment with a First Look, my role remains to capture that connection with elegance and authenticity. My technical setup (dual memory cards and redundant storage) ensures that this once-in-a-lifetime moment will be preserved for decades to come.

Are you planning your wedding in Montreal or Laval for 2026? Choosing the right schedule is crucial to ensuring you have wonderful memories. Let’s discuss your itinerary together to see if the “First Look” fits your vision and personality.
